Petrol in a Diesel car…. uh oh, need a Geelong mechanic real quick!!January 31, 2018
It doesn’t happen very often, but from time to time we get the phone call from a stressed out driver that they’ve put the wrong fuel in their car – usually petrol into a diesel. It’s usually panic stations and quite an air of annoyance that accompanies the phone call! Then once they’ve calmed down the embarrassment kicks in! But more often than not the situation is quite resolvable and our Geelong mechanics can sort it out.
It’s definitely an easy mistake to make. Particularly if it’s not the usual vehicle that you drive. And let’s face it, people are so busy these days or the kids are screaming in the back so it’s very easy to get distracted and park at the wrong bowser. Fortunately most people realise very quickly they’ve done the wrong thing and take action before it becomes a major problem. For those that don’t realise in time it can be a costly mistake. Putting petrol in a diesel vehicle can start to play havoc with the fuel system very quickly and can lead to the car needing:
- a new engine
- fuel tank
- and injectors.
So what should you do if you are unlucky enough to pick the wrong pump? Firstly, don’t start the car! Then call a mechanic – Geelong’s BJT Automotive have some good ones!! The car would need to be towed to a workshop so the fuel can be drained. If the car hasn’t been driven chances are a fuel drain may be all that is required but otherwise the fuel pump, injectors and other parts may need to be replaced also. And worse case scenario is you cook your engine and that’s not good news!
So try not to panic if this happens to you! Just stop and contact us and we can help you sort out your stuff up and ease the embarrassment!
