What Does a Car Service Actually Include? A Guide for Geelong Drivers

When you book your car in for a service, you might expect the basics: an oil change, a filter replacement and a quick check over.

But a proper car service involves much more than simply changing the oil.

At BJT Automotive in Belmont, Geelong, we take the time to properly inspect the vehicle, being thorough and giving you a clear understanding of what your car needs now — and what may need attention in the future.

So, what actually happens during a car service?

What Is a Car Service?

A car service is a scheduled inspection and maintenance procedure designed to keep your vehicle running safely, reliably and efficiently.

Exactly what’s included depends on:

  • The make and model of your vehicle
  • Its age and kilometres
  • The manufacturer’s service schedule
  • Whether it’s due for a minor or major service
  • How the vehicle is used
  • Any problems or symptoms you’ve noticed

Your owner’s manual or logbook will usually provide the manufacturer’s recommended servicing intervals and maintenance requirements.

1. Engine Oil and Filter

One of the most common parts of a routine service is checking and replacing the engine oil and oil filter.

Over time, oil becomes contaminated and loses some of its effectiveness, which is why regular oil changes are important.

The correct oil specification is important too. Different engines require different types and grades of oil, so it’s important to use oil that meets the manufacturer’s requirements. At BJT Automotive we are a FUCHS workshop and well stocked with just about every oil and fluid needed for servicing. We take the time to look up exactly what oil or fluid is required, and we use it.

2. Fluid Levels and Condition

A service will generally include checking important fluid levels and looking for signs of leaks or other problems.

Depending on the vehicle, this can include:

  • Engine coolant
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windscreen washer fluid
  • Other manufacturer-specified fluids

Simply topping up a fluid isn’t always the answer. If a fluid level is repeatedly low, there could be a leak or another underlying problem that needs to be investigated.

3. Brakes

Your brakes are one of the most important safety systems on your vehicle.

As part of our thorough service we inspect the braking system, including components such as brake pads, discs or rotors and other relevant components.

Depending on the vehicle and service requirements, the condition of the brake system may be assessed for:

  • Pad wear
  • Disc or rotor condition
  • Brake fluid condition
  • Uneven wear
  • Leaks
  • Unusual noises
  • Other signs of potential problems

If your brakes are squeaking, shuddering, pulling to one side or feeling different, make sure you mention this when booking your service.

4. Tyres

Your tyres are the only part of your car that actually makes contact with the road, so their condition is critical.

Uneven tyre wear can also provide clues about other problems, such as wheel alignment, steering or suspension issues. If one tyre is wearing differently from the others, it’s worth finding out why rather than simply replacing the tyre.

We are able to carry out tyre replacement and puncture repairs in our Geelong workshop on the same day it is booked in for a service, saving you a second trip.

5. Steering and Suspension

Your steering and suspension systems affect how your vehicle handles, rides and responds to the road.

During a thorough inspection, relevant components are checked for signs of:

  • Excessive wear
  • Damage
  • Leaks
  • Loose components
  • Worn bushes
  • Unusual movement
  • Other problems affecting handling

You should also tell us if you’ve noticed:

  • Clunking or knocking over bumps
  • The car pulling to one side
  • Excessive bouncing
  • Loose steering
  • Changes in handling

These symptoms can help point towards problems that may not be obvious from a basic visual inspection.

6. Battery and Starting System

During a car service we always test the battery’s condition, connections and other relevant components.

Signs your battery may need attention include:

  • Slow engine cranking
  • Difficulty starting
  • Electrical problems
  • A battery warning light
  • A battery that repeatedly goes flat

We stock Bond batteries in our workshop – a high quality battery from a local company.

7. Belts, Hoses and Other Components

Our mechanic’s inspect belts, hoses and other components that can deteriorate with age and use.

This can help identify issues such as:

  • Cracking
  • Excessive wear
  • Leaks
  • Damage
  • Deterioration

Some components have specific replacement intervals set by the manufacturer, while others are replaced based on their condition.

8. Lights, Wipers and Basic Safety Checks

A service also includes checking basic items that are easy to overlook during everyday driving.

These include:

  • Headlights
  • Brake lights
  • Indicators
  • Windscreen wipers
  • Windscreen washers
  • Horn
  • Other safety-related equipment

Minor vs Major Car Services

Not every service is identical.

A minor service generally involves routine maintenance and inspections, while a major service typically involves more extensive checks and additional maintenance items.

The exact requirements vary depending on the vehicle and manufacturer.

That’s why it’s important to follow your vehicle’s service schedule rather than assuming every service should be identical.

Some vehicles also have specific maintenance requirements at particular kilometre intervals.

How Often Should You Service Your Car?

The correct servicing interval depends on your vehicle.

Many vehicles have service intervals based on both time and kilometres, so you may need to service your car after a certain number of kilometres or a certain period of time — whichever comes first.

Your owner’s manual or logbook should provide the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.

If you’re unsure when your car is due for its next service, BJT Automotive can help you determine what maintenance your vehicle requires.

What About Logbook Servicing?

If you have a newer vehicle, you may be concerned that you need to return to the dealership for servicing.

At BJT Automotive we carry out logbook servicing in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements, without affecting the warranty.

The important thing is that the correct servicing procedures, parts and specifications are followed and the required maintenance is properly documented.

If you’re unsure about the requirements for your vehicle, ask before booking the service.
